In this book review, Abraha Asfaw offers an overview of Education and Resilience in Crisis: Challenges and Opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa, edited by Mary Mendenhall, Gauthier Marchais, Yusuf Sayed, and Neil Boothby. The authors in this edited volume explore education in conflict-affected sub-Saharan Africa through in-depth studies of humanitarian projects and programs, teacher and student wellbeing and resilience, and helpful tools of support. Asfaw presents the book’s strengths while also pointing out the authors do not comment enough on the external factors that influence some learners’ discontinuation of studies and that their analysis fails to include a gender dimension. Asfaw concludes with a call for researchers to refrain from comparing systems in favor of focusing on program objectives when considering and recommending interventions.en
